Hey there!

4th Wedding Anniversary in Hawaii - www.lauraclarkephotos.com

This year’s wedding anniversary sure was one for the books! We were in Hawaii with 15 of our friends all sharing an incredible house on the beach in the North Shore. We woke up to our friend’s 3-year-old daughter wishing us a happy anniversary and our friends all giving us hugs. We also got to share our wedding date with our good friends who exchanged vows on a beach that is near and dear to their hearts. When I think of all the ways we could have celebrated that day I don’t think anything could come close to seeing our friends exchange vows and start their marriage.

Every time I’m at a wedding and I hear their vows I’m reminded of the ones Robin and I shared in Barbados. We both knew that we wanted something unique to us but we also wanted to say the same thing, to vow the same thing. We also knew that we would most likely not be able to read our own vows (er- I’d be a sobbing mess) so we had our officiant read them for us to repeat. It was a few weeks before leaving to Barbados when Robin and I sat on our couch and listed what we would vow to the other. We wrote out the ones that mattered most and that supported the type of marriage we wanted. This is what we came up with:

I take you to be my best friend, my faithful partner, and my true love.
I promise to encourage you and inspire you through good times and bad.
I will forever be there to laugh with you, to lift you up when you are down, and to love you unconditionally through all of our adventures in life together.

Reading it again makes me teary-eyed, I remember those key words: best friend, encouraging, inspiring, laughter and adventure. Those were the things we had already built our relationship on and wanted to continue. I think it’s important to come back to those vows throughout your marriage – some years are full of fun and excitement and some years are challenging and full of tests. This fourth year was both fun and challenging for us, there seemed to be more bad times than good and we had to learn how to navigate those tests together. So it’s fitting to come back to those vows and remember that no matter the season, if it’s good or bad, that we will encourage and inspire each other through it.

In keeping with our annual tradition of celebrating our anniversary with a trip, we’ll be staying in Hawaii exploring Maui for another week. It’ll be great to spend more time together just the two of us and to kick off our anniversary with incredible views, tons of rum, and that relaxed aloha vibe.
